The Baltimore County Council has approved new regulations requiring single family homes built after January first to have sprinklers.

Safety officials believe they save lives.

Those in the building trades expect the new regulations will add at least $5 thousand to the cost of every new home built in Baltimore County starting next year.

That's when the requirement kicks in for all one and two family homes.

Construction that starts, or is applied for, before January first is grandfathered in and will not have to have them.

The county like many others has required sprinkler systems to douse flames quickly in townhomes and apartment complexes for almost two decades
