The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is investigating a fatal crash in South Baltimore that followed an attempted police stop Wednesday morning.
According to a Wednesday night news release, investigators say that at 2:18 a.m., a Maryland Transportation Authority officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop after exiting Interstate 95 at exit 55 northbound, when the driver of the vehicle declined to stop.
Instead, the driver turned onto East McComas Street and accelerated before losing control and driving into a pillar beneath I-95. According to the OAG release, the officer then attempted to provide the driver with medical aid until medical services arrive.
Medics pronounced the driver dead on the scene. No officers were injured.
The IID is investigating the incident, with assistance from the Maryland State Police Crash Team and urges those with information about the case to contact them at 410-576-7070 or by email at IID@oag.state.md.us.
Per the division’s policy, the IID will typically release the names of the decedent and any involved officers within two days, as well as the officer’s dashboard camera footage within 20 business days.
