2nd fatal shooting in less than a month involving Baltimore County police

A man was fatally shot by police in Dundalk and later died of his injuries, Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough said Sunday night.

Police were called to the 8200 block of North Boundary Road for a person experiencing a mental health crisis around 7:30 p.m., the chief said.

“Officers made contact with the armed subject to the rear of the residence. During this encounter, the officer responded to the actions of the armed subject, resulting in one officer discharging their firearm striking the adult male,” police said in a news release early Monday.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. A firearm was recovered from the scene, police said in the release.

McCullough, speaking at a news conference Sunday night in Dundalk, said two officers were involved in the encounter with the man. They will be placed on administrative leave.

Police believe the victim was armed with a handgun, according to the chief.

“The thing that I want to point out is the danger in terms of the number of handguns that are on the street, the number of handguns that our officers are encountering more and more in these incidents, people are armed, whether armed with a handgun or armed with a knife,” McCullough said.

It was unclear Sunday night what transpired before the shooting behind a residence on the 8200 block of North Boundary Road, where a police spokesperson said the incident took place. He said no officers were injured.

“Residents can expect a large police presence as the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated. There is no threat to the community,” Baltimore County police said in a post to X.

“This was a very isolated incident,” McCullough said.

In a post late Sunday on X, Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown said the shooting is being investigated by the Independent Investigations Division of the state attorney general’s office, which is tasked with examining fatal police encounters or those with injuries that might result in death.

The deadly shooting is the second in less than a month for the Baltimore County Police Department. On April 23, a man who police said was shooting arrows at passing cars in Arbutus was killed by a county police officer. Arvel Jones Sr., 51, was fatally shot by Baltimore County Police Detective Todd Weidel, a 28-year veteran of the department, according to IID, which is investigating the incident.

Last week, a Baltimore County officer shot and injured a man in Essex who police said was armed with a knife. The officer was placed on administrative leave and an investigation is underway, authorities said.

In March, a Baltimore County officer was seriously injured when he was shot outside the Wilkens Precinct in Catonsville. The suspect was also shot by officers. Police charged a 27-year-old Baltimore teacher with attempted first-degree murder in connection to the shooting.

Since Jan. 1, there have been eight police-involved deaths in Maryland, according to data listed by the IID on its website. Half of those incidents have been fatal shootings.
