Father of Brother Bobby Gibbons

 

Edwin C. Gibbons, Jr., an insurance agent for Allstate Insurance Company, died July 11, 2023 of natural causes, surrounded by his family. He was 96 years old.

The son of the late Edwin C. Gibbons, Sr., a lifelong stock broker, and the late Lillian Behrens Gibbons, a homemaker. Edwin C. Gibbons, Jr. was born in Baltimore and spent his early years growing up in the Hamilton area of Baltimore City, while being taught at St. Dominic’s School, from which he graduated in 1940. He then attended Mount Saint Joseph High School, graduating in 1944.

Also in 1944, at the age of 17, he enlisted in the Navy during WWII. He was assigned to the U.S. Naval Air Gunner’s school in Jacksonville, Florida as a Yeoman Striker. He was honorably discharged from the Navy at the end of the war in 1946 as a Yeoman 2nd Class. In the late 50’s and mid 60’s, he served in the active Naval Reserve at Fort McHenry for approximately 7 years, attaining the rank of Lieutenant (J.G.). After his service, in September of 1946, he entered Mount Saint Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland on the G.I. Bill of Rights. He graduated from the Mount in 1950 and over the next 14 years worked for four different employers in sales. Finally, in 1964, he started as a Retail Sales Agent for the Allstate Insurance Company in the Sears North Avenue store. After more than 30 years in the Insurance business, Ed retired from Allstate at the end of 1994 as a Senior Account Agent. Upon retiring, Ed became active in the Pro-Life movement with the Knights of Columbus Long Green Valley Council, and through St. John’s Respect Life Committee.

In 1952, he married Patricia Elizabeth Wohrna and subsequently they were blessed with 4 children. After residing over 20 years in the St. Matthew’s Parish in the Northwood section of Baltimore City, Ed and his wife had a home built in 1977 in the Baldwin Area of Baltimore County, and they lived there, in the St. John’s Parish, for 46 years.

Ed loved his Catholic faith, his family, rockfish, Coors Light and pretzels.

Ed is survived by his wife Patricia W. Gibbons (Nee Wohrna); children Margaret Ann Gibbons, Joseph Charles Gibbons, and his wife Shirley Marie, Thomas P. Gibbons, and Robert Gibbons and his wife Kelly; 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.Ed is predeceased by his brother Harry J. Gibbons.

The family will receive friends at the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley, Inc., 10 W. Padonia Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Wednesday, July 19, 2023 from 2pm to 6pm. At 4:00pm there will be a Rosary Service, followed by a time of sharing by family and friends.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church, 13305 Long Green Pike, Hydes, Maryland 21282 on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at 10am. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be directed in Ed’s memory to Pregnancy Center North, 7402 York Road, Towson, Maryland 21204.
