A Baltimore County Police officer shot and injured a man armed with a knife Thursday night in Essex, according to a news release.

Police said they encountered the man at about 9:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Pine Road. According to the release, he was armed with a knife and “refused to comply” with orders to drop it. Authorities suggested he may have been in crisis.

An officer shot the man “while attempting to gain compliance,” police said, and the man was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police did not name the injured person or the involved officer, who authorities said was placed on administrative leave.

An investigation is ongoing, and the department said it will provide more information as it becomes available.

A county police spokesperson declined to comment Friday morning.
